About Education for Ministry

Education for Ministry (EfM), is a unique experiential theological education program for laity under the auspices of Program Center of the School of Theology at the University of the  South. Since its founding in 1975, the program has assisted students in discovering how to respond to the call of Christian service. EfM helps students encounter the Christian tradition's breadth and depth and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together. An EfM group of six to 12 students with a trained mentor meet weekly for two and a half to three hours over the course of a nine-month academic year. Some groups are entirely online.

Students sign up one year at a time for  this four-year program. It  covers the basics of a theological education in the Old and New Testaments,   church history, liturgy, and theology.  The program grants a certificate at the completion of the four years and 18 Continuing Education Units for each year's work. (For additional information about the Education for Ministry Program click on the Sewanee button above to access the University of the South EfM home page).
