Course Description

The program consists of seven courses, each with components of lecture, application, and reflection. Each has assignments and specific requirements for completion.

    Leadership of Congregational Song

        Two tracks are available: one for organ and/or piano, and one for c

    Liturgy and Music: Foundations of Christian Worship

        A study of the basic order of worship and how our denominational lenses color our liturgies

 

    Hymnody of the Christian Church

        A wide ranging historical introduction up to present-day hymn writers and trends

 

    Principles of Choral Leadership

        Covering both voice training for choirs and choral conducting

 

    Teaching New Music

        Looking at at the reasons for introducing new music 

        Obstacles that might be faced

        How to  choose new music for your church

 

    Resources for an Effective Music Ministry

        Developing a music program

        the pastor/musician relationship

        Pastoral skills

        Arranging hymns as anthems

        Working with youth and adult choirs

 

    Philosophy of Church Music

        This course extends over both years and culminating in a paper setting forth the student's

        personal philosophy that will inform his or her work as a church musician.
